About Helen

Helen 72dpiHi – I’m Helen and the other half of Mum’s The Boss. In my life BC (before children) I was a teacher, but once I was expecting my first child I knew that I wanted to be at home with him full time – a less popular option in these times. Luckily my husband was fully in favour, as were both sets of parents so I didn’t have to fight my corner domestically!

I was never quite sure how I would enjoy the early stages of motherhood as I really enjoyed older children 5+ but had never been a ‘baby’ person. However found it was the best thing in the world and son number one was very quickly followed by son number two 15 ½ months later!

I was always determined to not return full time to teaching as despite the myths that it is an easy life with weeks of holidays, it would have meant never being able to take the children to school or pick them up, and having to miss those numerous special assemblies and sports days etc.

I also started to look at ‘work at home around the kids’ solutions and saw many that I could imagine myself being involved with. I had looked at a couple of options before I came across something that I thought would be perfect – a magazine franchise. It would allow me to write a little, be creative, and try something new – selling, which I was assured by everyone that I would be good at.

Unfortunately, despite some careful research, it turned out to not be what it seemed and am just grateful that I stopped when I did. I know some franchises are run well, but I have also met a surprisingly high number of people who have had great disappointment through the Franchising route.

However, one fantastic thing that came from the whole experience was meeting Sam and being involved with Mum’s The Boss. Like her, if I had realised how much help, support and information was out there, how many natural resources women have and that I did actually have some basic business skills I would never have spent good money  for what appeared to be ‘the safe option’.

Sam & I have a great partnership where the workload is easily shared along the lines of our natural strengths, many common interests that bind us together (children, wine & books to name a few!) and the same belief and vision for what we have created – Mum’s The Boss.

Mum’s the Boss has been running for a year now since that initial meeting  and the change in that time is huge….from 7  cups of coffee and an idea to over 50 ladies on the database  who meet up, a website, a monthly newsletter, a blog……and as Sam says….so much more to come…….so stay tuned!
