In June, the new coalition government announced a series of changes to the tax credits system. These included an increase in the “taper rate”, that is the rate at which the tax credit will disappear over certain income thresholds, a reduction in the threshold for receiving the family element of tax credits, and an increase in the child element of Child Tax Credit.

The income disregard has also been changed. Whereas under current rules your income would have to change by £25,000 for your claim to be altered, from April 2011 this will come down to £10,000, and then down to £5,000 from April 2013. So if your income increases by just £5,000 in 2013, your entitlement will immediately be adjusted. Also, if your income falls, it will have to fall by more than £2,500 under the previous year before your claim will be adjusted.

They have also changed the period in which you may backdate your claim, so that from April 2010 you will only be able to backdate your claim by one month. This makes it even more important that you put in a pre-emptive claim as soon as you think you might be eligible for tax credits. If you leave it too late, they will only backdate your claim by one month from April 2012.

Other changes include removing the additional £545 we used to get for having a child under the age of 1 (from April 2011) and scrapping the previous government plans to increase the amount of CTC where we have children under the age of 3 (which was to go ahead in April 2012).

Previously if your income as a family was £58.000 you could expect some amount of child tax credits due to the threshold for claims being £50,000. However, this threshold is being reduced to £40,000 from April 2011, and then it will be removed completely in April 2012 which means that the point at which the family element tapers away is immediate.

So what might this mean for you? Well, if you are a family of 2 adults earning £25k per annum and with no childcare costs, with one child your claim will be £545 for 2010-11 and 2011-12, but from April 2012 it will drop to just over £30 per annum due to the heavy tapering away of the family element of the child tax credit.

When you’re having one of those days when the thought of sitting in an air-conditioned office in blissful solitude appeals rather more than sitting at your dining room table trying to work while your children are pinching each other and shrieking in the background, then take a moment to think about the following light-hearted advantages of being a work at home mum.

1. Lunch – never again will you have to endure a soggy sarnie or a limp salad. If you fancy a fishfinger sandwich or cheese on toast you can rustle up whatever you fancy, whenever you fancy!

2. Weather – no commuting to worry about in the rain, snow or the baking heat. And if the sun does decide to shine you can decamp to the garden or give yourself an impromptu day off.

3. Dress code – Power Suit or PJs? Stilettos or Slippers? It’s a no-brainer!

4. Sick days – it’s easier to work around when you or the children are sick and less of a guilt trip - you are neither leaving a poorly child or letting down colleagues.

5. Tea breaks – the kettle’s always on and there are always biscuits in the tin!

6. Off peak – being home all day you can take advantage of cheaper delivery slots for the groceries, cheap weekday deals at the local soft play, less crowded buses & trains, and never miss a parcel delivery or the end of an auction on eBay!

7. The Internet – the wonders of modern technology mean that you can email customers, print postage labels, book parcel collections, shop for groceries, book theatre tickets, plan holidays, listen to music, keep up with the news and market your business online all at the same time from the comfort of your own kitchen table/supermarket/bed/hot tub (delete as applicable!).

8. Chores - little and often, these can be spread throughout the week rather than being saved up for a massive cleaning binge at the weekend. And in keeping with Health & Safety Regs they can even double up as a welcome screen break for tired eyes!

9. Office politics – you don’t have to share an office with Mr Bore, Ms Brainless or Mrs Body Odour. Just add a smiley face to your email correspondence and your customers and clients will never know when you’re having a bad day or are feeling hormonal!

10. Mummy’s Little Helpers - yes they will get under your feet and stop you doing things, but you are there for them, you will never get this time again and you’re being a fantastic role model for the next generation of entrepreneurs!

Never forget ladies – YOU are living the dream!!
